Details of our Paintings
We sell English and European watercolours painted from the early 1800s up to around 1940s. The majority of our pictures are circa 1880 to 1920. All our pictures are carefully examined, restored where necessary and cleaned, using conservation techniques. They are mounted using PH neutral mount board and tape and then framed.
Most of our paintings are supplied in new frames although occasionally we will retain an original frame if the condition is good and it is in keeping with the painting.
We glaze using acrylic rather than glass for two reasons: Acrylic is almost unbreakable and therefore much safer in transit and it protects the painting from damage during shipment. It is also much lighter in weight and therefore saves you money in shipping costs! Acrylic glazing is, however, vulnerable to scratches and so care is needed until it has been hung. Once you have it on your wall, you will not be able to tell the difference from glass.

Please note!
Many of our paintings are well over 100 years old, therefore they will occasionally have minor blemishes; this is the essential nature of watercolour painting. Also because they are painted on rag paper or board, there are sometimes small imperfections in the paper (called inclusions) and possibly also very slight discolorations, sometimes called foxing. Most of this we remove but it is not always possible to remove it all without causing damage to the painting. If it is noticeable, we draw your attention to it.
Finally we would like to mention that we optimise the photos for correct colour and clarity but it is difficult to give a true sense of the beauty of our paintings within the limitations of a photograph, even using the amazing zoom technology that we have.
The comment our clients make more than any other is how pleasantly surprised they are when their painting arrives: it is always so much nicer than the photos can do justice to.
May we suggest that when you hang your painting, you do not place it in direct sunlight which can cause colours to fade.
