Born 1866 in Bideford, Devon Hugh was a frequent painter of the countryside around the Bideford region. He ran the Westward Ho Art Club and was also headmaster of the Bideford School of Art from 1910 until the 1930s. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and The Royal Society of British Artists. This view of heather and gorse was painted late evening as the sun went down.
